Your hosts at Badger’s Lodge are Katrin and Joachim Heinen.
We are a German couple and moved to Knysna in 2001. In October 2001 we started Badger’s Lodge and 20 years later we are still enjoying hosting guests from all over the world. We had good years but unfortunately also bad ones. The worst setback we had was in 2017 when a bushfire struck the area and burnt down most of the lodge. But soon after the fire we started rebuilding and reopened the lodge in October 2018. The Corona Pandemic and its travel restrictions had and still has a ruinous impact on the area, but we are positive and looking forward to hosting many guests again soon.
The name Badger is the shortening of Honey Badger. At first, we only liked the name but over the years it has shown that the characteristics of the Honey Badger also relate to us:
Fearless – we were 23 years ago when we started young and inexperienced
Unshakable – we have the endurance to carry on even through difficult times
Resourceful – with the design of the lodge as well as handling uncomfortable situations
Determined – to finish the rebuild after the fires and to make it through the Covid 19 pandemic
